He earned his BFA in Art & Architecture at Miami University and later studied at the College of the Redwoods Fine Furniture Program, classes of '03,'04. There, he refined countless hand-tool and construction techniques while honing his ability to articulate various design elements, such as balance, proportion, detail and personal style.

Building a long lasting piece of craft entails more than mere perfect construction with sound joinery. Objects we admire dearly have an aesthetic that speaks to us on a daily basis. It is rarely the ornate, flashy or trendy styles that remain attractive to us over time, but more so an understated calmness about something that often holds our respect. The attitudes we have about our surrounding furnishings are similar to those we have about people, in a sense. We generally try to avoid those who brag about themselves and interrupt everyone in conversation, while we gravitate to those with modesty, style and wit. Brek’s designs contain subtleties that are often unnoticed at first glance, but play an unmistakable role in each piece's feel. There might be a gentle upward curve of a rail that visually counteracts gravity's sag, or the small outward flair in the legs that gives the impression of stability. Combined with crisp details and thoughtful arrangements of grain and color, these attributes are woven together to articulate the unique personality in every piece.
